"We get to really engage with kids and it's awesome to see their 'Aha!' moments when they figure out how to solve the problem. It feels good to just be a part of it all"
Joel, Lead Instructor at the Calabazas Branch

"We had a lot of questions coming into the summer, but the Training Summit helped us develop skills, understand the responsibilities, and also meet all the people we were going to work with"
- Darya, Vice President of the Tully Branch

"I have to say that the outings were one of my favorite parts of the summer. Volunteering brought me closer to people across the Bay that I would have otherwise never met. Shoreline and In-N-Out was probably my favorite team bonding activity."
- Sahana, Vice-President of the Village Square Branch

"Getting to be part of a team of people who are working towards the same goals as you is one of the best things about volunteering. Going on boba runs and other team bonding outings really helped us work together" - Samheeta, President of the Calabazas Branch

"Volunteering opened up other opportunities for me. I got to help organize our team for the Sevathon run, and we had a great time that afternoon in Downtown talking to people, getting new mentors, and engaging in the nonprofit community" - Shreya, Village Square Branch

"At first team culture did not seem like a huge priority, but once we went boating and really got to know each other, I realized how much it actually helped us work better together. People were more receptive of new ideas and willing to put more time and effort for something that everyone believed in" - Savinay, COO of theCodeMatrix

FAQ

What happens after I apply?
We review your application and the interview time you selected. Then we get back to you on the interview details. This process should take about 1-2 days.
How is the interview done?
The interview is done in an informal way. It is a chance for us to get to know you and for you to ask us any questions you might have. You also get the opportunity to expand on what you have written about yourself in your application.

The interview is done via phone call. It takes about 10-15 minutes.
What do you look for in a volunteer?
We look for trustworthiness, punctuality in communication, and reliability.

Trust: It is really important for us to be able to trust you and for you to be able to trust us. We want to make sure that we build strong connections between all club officers on our team.

Communication: It is extremely vital to have strong communication between club officers, branch leaders, the core team, and adult mentors. Every club officer should respond promptly to emails, forms, and messages through Remind, team group chats, and the Facebook group.

Reliability: We want to be able to depend on you when it comes to finishing projects and assignments and leading kids in activities.
What do I do as a volunteer?
You will be mentoring students through modules, activities/games, and projects in the curriculum. You will be preparing presentations to guide you in instruction based on the curriculum. You can also be involved in writing blog articles about the summer experience and creating videos. For information regarding leadership positions, refer to the question below.
How much is the time commitment?
The summer clubs run for 4-6 weeks. Each week consists of 3 days of 2 hours each. Volunteers are expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start time and can leave 15-20 minutes after the session time is completed. Once a week, there will be a 30 minute meeting via Google Hangouts for the team to plan the events of the following week. Additionally, lead volunteer instructors are expected to prepare for lessons prior to each session. This will take roughly 30-40 minutes per week. Overall, the time commitment is 8-10 hours per week during the summer.
What is the training like?
We do most of our training online through online courses that cover our rules, responsibilities, curriculum, logistics information, and media/design tips. There will be a Training Summit in the first week of June (Date/Time currently TBD). One week before the start of the program, the leaders of each branch will hold meetings with team members to review important information.
Can I earn a leadership position?
In each branch, there are 3 main leadership positions: President, Vice-President, and Lead Instructor. If you are given a leadership position, you will be entrusted with communicating with the core team, reporting on daily club activities, scheduling meetings, and coordinating with the directors of the facility the club is taking place in.

Although these positions are critical to running the branches smoothly, it is very important to understand theCodeMatrix culture. We do not give more or less value to our volunteers based on their positions. We expect all of our volunteers to be leaders, regardless of their role or title.
What happens after the summer?
We encourage you to join our Project Teams during the school year! We work on 5-6 projects such as App, Website, Curriculum, Outreach, Media, and Business. You can choose what team you would like to be a part of, work remotely, and attend meetings via Google Hangouts.
